New Delhi: As the Winter session entered its third week yesterday, Parliament remained deadlocked and stalled due to stand-off between the Opposition and the government over demonetisation and how the debate should be held on it.
For the 13th consecutive day, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha failed to transact any business due to the uproar created by the Opposition over demonetisation, even as the government expressed readiness to discuss the issue so that any deficiencies could be corrected.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that Congress and Trinamool Congress are indulging in "competitive obstructionism".
"It is now competitive obstructionism between the Congress and the Trinamool which is holding up the debate in Parliament," Jaitley said in a Facebook post.
The ongoing Winter session of Parliament has virtually been a washout with Congress and Trinamool staging vociferous protests against demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8.
Trinamool has also been targeting the government over presence of army at toll plazas in West Bengal.
Congress and some other opposition parties have been demanding an apology from Modi for his remarks against those criticising the move.
Union minister Ananth Kumar also attacked TMC and Congress for disrupting Parliament proceedings and claimed that they were losing credibility and getting isolated among opposition parties due to their "negative" approach.
Mamata demands probe
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded a probe by a Supreme Court judge into the assets bought by the BJP just months before demonetisation was announced. Banerjee also asked WB civil service officers not to act on any directive by the central government without asking the state government.
