2 foetuses in a carry bag discovered at a waste dump in Kurla, taken to local hospital for sex determination; a one-day-old girl found dead on the shores of Khar-Danda
From the warmth of a mother’s womb to the grime of a garbage dump — that’s been the fate of many girls in the state who were not allowed to be born by their cynical parents and money-hungry doctors. Locals from Vinoba Bhave Nagar area informed the police control room on Thursday night that two foetuses in a carry bag had been thrown into a garbage dump by an unidentified person. Cops took the blastulae with them to Rajawadi Hospital for sex determination and identification.

“Preliminarily we have been told that one foetus is four months old and the other is of two months,” said Prabhakar Satam, assistant commissioner of police, Kurla division. The police have formed teams to identify which clinic had carried out the abortions and if they were illegal. Cops are also trying to detect if any chemist stores in the area supply medicines for termination of pregnancies. As the foetuses are of dissimilar ages, it is highly improbable they came from the womb of the same woman. “The process of sex determination of the foetuses is also on and we are investigating the case from all angles,” said Satam.

In another incident, a day-old girl was found dead on the shores of Khar-Danda on Thursday night by some locals who informed Khar police station. One of the residents of the Koli Village, on the condition of anonymity, said, “The infant was found near the jetty where the fishing boats are kept. When we informed the police, they rushed to the spot.”
Confirming the death, additional commissioner of police (Western region) Vishwas Nangre-Patil said, “The baby was a day old as the umbilical chord was intact. We have registered a case under sections 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and 316 (causing death of quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) of the IPC and are investigating the case. It probably would be some local who has discarded the baby there. We are waiting for some details from our informers as well.” Cops have already visited local hospitals to find out about births of girls in days prior to the finding.u00a0
