As the mercury dips, so do the profits of the hotel industry. The overall restaurant business in the city has shrunk by 25 per cent. The most to be affected are hotels having garden facilities.

"In the evening, nobody wants to sit in the hotel garden," said Ganesh Shetty, president, Pune Restaurants and Hoteliers Association. "The 3,500 hotels in and around the city have been suffering because of the current cold wave. If it continues and the temperature dips further, the situation will be pathetic."

The Indian Meteorological Department, Pune has predicted the temperature will dip by 6 degrees Celsius tomorrow and on Tuesday.u00a0

The city experienced the season's coldest day yesterday, when the minimum temperature dipped by 2.3 degrees in just 24 hours. Punekars sported sweaters and shawls even during the day time, as the city temperature was 7.3 degrees Celsius (a degree less than normal) and the maximum at 27.3 degree Celsius (2 degrees below normal). The city's lowest temperature of 7.3 degrees Celcius is lower than Mahabaleshwar, where the lowest temperature has been recorded as 10 degrees.

Dr A B Mazumdar, deputy director general, Weather Forecasting, IMD Pune, said that the cold conditions in the city was owing to the cold winds blowing from North India. "There is a decrease in moisture and it results in a drop in temperature," he said.
