The next time you attend a high-profile wedding in the city, do not be surprised if you find a fair-skinned young women speaking only English serving you gulab jamuns.

Foreign girls are in high demand at high-profile weddings in the city. It is not just the colour of their skin that makes wedding planners and coordinators seek them; their professional attitude is also highly appreciated.

Imran Rehman, a partner in Milestone Events, which is into wedding planning, says Indians are still fascinated with fair skin.

"It's their fair complexion which makes them very popular. They are also very professional and just keep doing their work," said Rehman. "With Indian girls, they take offence over small issues and make a scene."

Wedding planner and coordinator Rajesh Mehta, who runs Event Tailor, adds that girls from abroad are preferred because their presence at any social do just makes the evening look classy.

"We mostly follow international themes like Italian, Arabian and many others for high-profile weddings. We make these girls follow these themes and the event gets an international look. These girls work in various areas like bartending, serving, playing music and dancing."

Among the most preferred and popular girls are Russians, girls from European countries, Nepali girls and Mongolians. Though they charge much more than the locals, from Rs 3,500 to 5,000 for three hours of work, high-profile clients are ready to pay if they get good service.

Kishore Sarpotdar, a popular city caterer, said the girls are easily trained.

"They know how to behave with the guests and speak politely. Also, they do multi-tasking, like if you hire Russians they can serve and also do the belly dance," said Sarpotdar.

Ganesh Shetty, who had called a handful of Mongolian girls for his nephew Shailesh's wedding in December, said that foreigners give a different and rich feel to a wedding.

"We liked the way they treated the guests as they were well-trained and the event looked glamorous," said Shetty.

Getting the foreign workers is not a tough job. They come through coordinators, who decide on the timing and cost.

Mehta said they had a database and depending on the requirement, they inform the person.

"Once these girls come to Pune, they inform us that they are interested in working and that's how we maintain the database," said Mehta.
