Collaborators: Director Sumana Kittur with producer Agni Sridhar

Kallara Sante (Thieves' Fair) will be directed by her and is based on Agni Sridhar's novel Edegaarike (Guts), and will also be produced by him.

Producer Sridhar is all praise for director Kittur, saying "Women directors focus on their work. So Sumana Kittur is good for the job." He added that Kittur is currently at work on the script.

"The hero of Kallara Sante is a thief always looking to do his work without exerting himself. When thugs get an upper hand and the police can't take them on, common people suffer, said Sridhar.

"The film is also about politicians who talk hypocritically about Gandhi and his principles," he added.

'Nobody does homework'

Speaking on the poor quality of many recent films, Sridhar expressed his dissatisfaction plainly.

He said that most filmmakers are more interested in gimmicks than in scripting and homework. "When we make a quality film, we will get satisfaction even if it flops," he said.

"Many people describe cinema as a art but I think it is only a medium of expression. It has become a capital-intensive industry now," he said.

New venture

Sridhar is also excited about a film he is planning to direct himself, which is all set to go on the floors soon.

"I have been keen about cinematography since my youth, and when I wrote the script, Sumana and other friends persuaded me to direct it myself," he said.

Tentatively titled Tamas, the film deals with Hindu-Muslim conflict, bringing to mind the famous Bhisham Sahni teleserial of the same name, which also dealt with the same theme in the context of Partition.

Most people who heard the script have liked it and endorsed it, including Shivrajkumar, who will play the lead role, said Sridhar. "I discussed the subject with Shivanna and he agreed to act in the film," he told MiD DAY.

"Sandeep Chowta is composing the music and we have already finished two songs," Sridhar said, adding that he has a couple of actresses in mind for female lead, and will finalise the choice in a week.
