Cops posing as customers contact criminals on pretext of striking a deal; arrest 7 of gang and recover gem stones worth lakhs in the process
The Banasawadi police arrested seven members of a gang involved in passing off precious stones as diamonds and fooling unwary victims.
According to the police, they would brainwash prospective buyers into believing that the cheap gems in their possession were actually diamonds, for which they would collect hefty sums. Acting on a tip off, a police team posing as prospective buyers approached the gang and caught them red-handed from a hotel on Kammanahalli main road.
The police recovered around 48 pieces of precious stones and a gem tester machine from their possession.
"The gang of professional cheats used to sell precious stones as diamonds. We are yet to ascertain their criminal background and whether they are involved in any other cases previously," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Narayana Swamy.
On cross verifying with jewelers, the police found outu00a0 that the stones seized from the accused were worth a few lakh rupees. "We are also investigating the source of these stones and how the accused procured them," he added.
