Get set for an evening of rock

It's celebration time for rock music fans, as Them Clones and Medusa perform at Hard Rock Cafu00e9 tonight. Debarati Palit gives you the lowdown

Delhi-based band Them Clones is a senior pop-rock band consisting of Prithwish (vocals), Joseph L (guitar) Gucci Singh (guitar), Clarence Gonsalves (bass guitar) and Surojit De (drums). WHAT's ON spoke to Surojit De.

Numerous bands have performed in the city; what is your band's uniqueness?
In the last eight years, we have performed only five times in the city. We will be playing originals and have also put our music online for the people to choose their favourite tracks. Among the popular numbers, we will perform Bomb Song, My Life, Zephyretta, Awaken and Syndrome.

What do you think about the listeners in the city?
Something is definitely amiss from the music industry, which is why we are unable to connect with the audience. Blame it on us or the pub owners for not organising many musical gigs or the corporates for not financing properly. But the fact is that someone is at fault and we are unable to pull the right crowd. But the scene seems to be changing.

Who do you think is greatest Indian Rock band?
Pentagram and Parikrama.

Why aren't many Indian bands making it big internationally?u00a0u00a0
The event managers are not able to promote bands well. Also, organisers are looking for something, which we are unable to deliver. We have performed at London and people were blown away. They are not even aware that Indian rock bands exist, as their notion is that an Indian band plays sitar and guitar. But the scenario is changing and India will be the next big destination in the next five years.u00a0

What do you think about the other band performing with you tomorrow (Medusa)?
They are a good band and we have performed with them in Delhi. They try to experiment with their music and have brought about some changes to the electronica outfit. Medusa's music is always new and innovative.u00a0

At: Hard Rock Cafu00e9, near ABC Farms, Koregaon Park Road Extension, Mundhwa. Call: 40158888. Time: 8 pm onwards.

Entry: Free

Mumbai-based band Medusa includes Rahul (guitar), Siddharth (bass), Raxit (vocal) and Vinayak (drums). WHAT's ON quizzed the energetic electronic band member, Rahul, about what makes them tick.

What have you planned for tonight's performance?
We are playing original sets for a span of 50 to 60 minutes and no cover music. We will perform some of our popular numbers, including Anti Coke Ganpati, Hill Top and Sweet Smile Driving.u00a0

The city has many listeners who are ignorant of rock. Comment.
That's true and it's a major issue in Pune. Though we do not want to offend the audience, there is no proper direction, in terms of music for them. Hopefully, we will be able to convert them into good music listeners.

According to you, who is the greatest Indian Rock band?
Muscle Malai from Kerala, for sure.

Tell us one thing that you hate and love about Indian audience.
One thing that we love about the audience is that they get their food packed from home or some restaurant to the shows. We hate it when they add people on to our Facebook profile.u00a0

Why aren't many Indian bands making it big internationally?
The fact is that because India is a third-world country, we are not visible in the international arena. Once we get more money and popularity, it will become easier.

What do you think about the other band performing with you tomorrow (Them Clones)?
We have performed with Them Clones on a couple of occasions in Delhi. They are a good band with good music and they have been in the industry for very long now. Though we haven't heard them for the last couple of years, we are looking forward to the show.
