New Delhi: Reacting to the growing state of unrest in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and uphold the values of democracy.

'Violence does not benefit anybody. Everyone must work together for development and it is through development that we can serve the people, especially the poor. Every issue can be solved through dialogue,' the Prime Minister said in a public message.

He also added that violence on the land of Mahatma Gandhi is wrong and nothing can be achieved through it.

The Prime Minister asserted that Gujarat has always been on the road to development and the mantra for that has been peace. He ended the message appealing once again to the people of Gujarat to uphold the values of democracy and shun violence in all forms.

Following arson and stone-pelting incidents by the members of Patel community after the detention of their 22-year-old leader Hardik Patel on Tuesday night, a curfew was imposed in three towns of North Gujarat and some areas of Surat.

About 5,000 paramilitary personnel were rushed to Gujarat earlier in the wake of violence in several cities. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today, assuring her full support to tackle the situation.
