The Bombay High Court yesterday rejected a plea filed by NGO Parisar against the controversial Mutha riverside road. Speaking to MiD DAY, Manjusha Idhate, chief law consultant of the civic body, said that the court has upheld the verdicts given by local courts.

According to Idhate, HC Justice Murudula Bhatkar rejected Parisar’s claim that the riverside road was adding to the air pollution. The NGO has also asserted that there was no need for construction of Mutha riverside road, as the nearby NC Kelkar road had already been widened.

In 2000, Parisar had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), following which the Pune District Court had imposed a ban on the construction of the road in 2008. However, the ban on the controversial 4.1-km long road was lifted last year.

“That court had not only lifted the ban on construction, but had also ordered that they pay court expenses to the civic body,” Idhate informed.u00a0When contacted Vijay Paranjpe, one of the petitioners, said, “We are not aware of high court’s verdict.

We’ll decide the further course of action only after consulting our lawyer.” u00a0When asked, Paranjpe refused to comment if they would challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.u00a0
