Dyaneshwar Patil, a 35-year-old cyclist from Navi Mumbai, who was knocked down by a police van, at 7.30 am on Saturday in Ghansoli, had to traverse four hospitals over 12 hours in a metropolis like Mumbai before he could get his CT scan done.

Surprisingly, rather than helping him, the cops fled the scene and it was left to Patil’s wife, Anita, to run from pillar to post and ensure that her husband gets proper medical treatment.

On Saturday morning, Patil, who works at Mahalaxmi for a stapling pin company, left for work on his bicycle. He was planning to park his cycle at Ghansoli railway station before taking a train. Near Mookambika Temple in Ghansoli, a police van ran over his chest and left him bleeding from his abdomen.

He was initially taken to Divine Hospital at Ghansoli around 8.30 am for first-aid treatment. Since his line of treatment seemed to include surgery he was later shifted to Sai Snehdeep Hospital in Kopar Khairane. Dr Laxman Thadani, director of Sai Snehdeep Hospital, said, “Patil suffered liver injury and was bleeding from his abdomen. Further investigation had to be done to check if he could be treated without operation. There was a need to send him to a higher set up and that’s when we took a call to transfer him to KEM Hospital in Parel.”

Around 4 pm, Patil was brought to KEM Hospital in an ambulance where again after admission he was turned down saying the CT scan machine was not operational. Dr Shubhangi Parker, dean of KEM Hospital, said, “When the patient had been brought to our hospital, the CT scan machine had shut down for an hour due to work overload. There was also an electric glitch that was rectified by 4.40 pm due to which the patient had to be turned away.”

Meanwhile, Patil’s wife, Anita, was running from pillar to post and finally shifted her husband to JJ Hospital at Byculla where the CT scan was down at 8 pm. She told SUNDAY MiD DAY, “We have very few relatives in Mumbai and my husband is the sole earning member. I have two children aged four and 11. Today it was our daughter’s open day in school. Everything was going well till this accident happened.”

When contacted, a doctor from the surgical unit of JJ Hospital who had examined Patil, said that he had sustained severe injuries to the liver and there were chances of blood clotting too. “However, the line of treatment including surgery can be decided only after we receive the CT scan report. Though the patient complained of severe pain, now he is stable,” the doctor added.

When asked whether the patient could narrate the incident the doctor said, “The patient is in his senses and informed us that he was on his cycle when a police van knocked him down.”

Police speak
An official from Kopar Khairane police station said, “We have already registered an FIR against Police Naik DK Kadam under IPC Section 279 rash driving or riding on a public way and 338 causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others. Further investigations are on.”
