CCTV cameras at Sadar Bazar capture a Holi brawl in the market
They were high on Holi, and there were no cops around.
With their license to spill, their fooling around turned into an argument, and then an altercation ensued and they got divided into two groups.
The street fight continued for a while and they reached Barri Market in Sadar Bazar.
Too engrossed in bashing each other, members of the two groups failed to note that their street adventures were being recorded live on close-circuit television cameras installed in Delhi's biggest wholesale market.
The fight continued for more than 15 minutes, every moment of which was recorded. The market association, responsible for recording and monitoring the footage from the 16 cameras installed in the Bazar, showed the live fight to the police.
There were some known trouble makers involved and it did not take the police long to identify and nail the accused. However, all of them were let off after warning. No formal cases were registered against them. A police official said the CCTVs are important from the security point of view, too.
Sushil Aggarwal, vice-president of the Sadar Bazar Barri Market Traders Association said, "Around one and half years back, we had installed 16 cameras in the market that covers more than 200 shops. On Holi day in the afternoon, while I was at home, I got a call from the security guard, who informed me about a fight in the market. Few people were kicking one boy and later some others joined in."
"The guard tried to get them out, but they just won't leave. Next day, we saw the CCTV footage and informed the cops, who caught them. These cameras had earlier helped the police to catch a chain snatcher," he said.
The CCTVs are monitored at Aggarwal's shop. Though there is no dedicated staff to take care of the footage, the whole recording is checked on a daily basis.
