The BJP says it will not allow city hotels to serve beef to participants at Commonwealth games

As if the infrastructure for Commonwealth games was not headache enough for Delhi government, the

Opposition BJP may also create hurdles, literally.

The move comes close on the heels of the decision by the Commonwealth Games organizing committee that it would import beef for the players and officials.

There is ban on cow slaughter, processing and sale of its meat in Delhi, which was enforced under Delhi Agricultural Animal Protection Act, 1994 when BJP was in power under the chief ministership of Madan Lal Khurana.

"Nobody is above the law. Even the Commonwealth games panel has to honour the law. It can't seek an exception. We will lodge FIRs against the officials and hotel management for serving beef," said Arya, warning both Delhi and Central governments if beef would be served it may create law and order problem in the city.

"Sealing notices will be served to any hotel or premises found serving beef," warned MCD Standing Committee Chairman Ram Kishen Singhal.

Arya has also written to the Lieutenant Governor Tejender Khanna seeking intervention into the matter. "Keeping in view the religious sentiments of millions Indians, import of beef should be prohibited," he said.
