In less than a week after MiD DAY reported (Locals raise stink over hoteliers dumping garbage, May 14) that a few of the restaurants in the Deccan Gymkhana area were disposing off their waste at garbage containers placed near a famous sweet shop in the locality, meant for public use, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fined Hotel Sarovar and Hotel Amrapali on Friday.

“We have fined them Rs 2,000 each. They have accepted their mistake and assured us that it won’t be repeated. The hotels have started approaching the garbage-collecting vehicle instead of dumping the garbage in the public garbage containers,” said Divisional Sanitary Inspector Madhukar Karkud.

He added that under the Yashwantrao Chavan Pune Swachhta Abhiyan, the department would ensure that each panel gets a garbage-collecting vehicle.

“The areas where our vehicles won’t reach, volunteers from NGOs will help citizens in segregating and disposing off the garbage,” said Karkud.

He also said that if these hotels repeated the offence, then the amount of fine would be increased up to Rs 5,000.

Dr Sushma Date, founder member of Deccan Gymkhana Parisar Samiti, informed that since the time hotels were fined, their employees have stopped dumping garbage in public bins.

“The PMC officials told us that they will seek an explanation from KFC and Top of the Town regarding this matter, as they were also allegedly involved in dumping garbage in public bins,” said Dr Date.u00a0
