After three constables from Cottonpet Police Station, who went to arrest alleged extortionist Ayaz Chaudhary (30) on Tuesday, came back bruised and empty-handed, the city police received a lot of flak. The reality is that numerous problems are facing our constabulary. Praveen Kumar, who retired as Superintendent of Police in 2007 said, "Today, there is a deviation from standards and the training is only for name's sake."
Correct attitude
Kumar explained that attitudinal training is the need of the hour. "Everything is treated casually. If the right attitude training is given, things will change." he said. "Another problem is the yardstick used to select candidates. If you pass some examination, you're in the force. Instead, candidates should be selected after evaluating the role he or she would be suitable for." Kumar said that enough importance is not given to planning. Referring to the incident, he said, "The constables should have thought of the matter from all angles before going to arrest the culprit."
Better methods
He also said that during training, a constable has to under go parades, physical training and classes on law and order and basics of investigation.
"However, modern trends are not inculcated during training, as a result of which the discipline inculcated during training is lost soon therafter," he said.

'Not true'
City police are busy downplaying the incident. Inspector Gopala KP, whose men faced the music, explained away the incident. "Nothing like that happened. Only one constable's shirt was torn, and this is because the goon manhandled him. The other two constables were there, but the goon managed to escape before they could do anything."
