Muralitharan was travelling in the bus attacked by terrorists but is safe, mother-in-law Dr Nithya Ramamurthy told MiD DAY, adding "I'm terribly shaken... I'm terribly upset... the attack is condemnable."
The attack
The Sri Lankan squad was in Pakistan to play a series that included three one-day internationals and two test matches. But the series came to nought when a group of 12 gunmen carrying rocket launchers, grenades and guns targeted the team bus, which was about 500 yards from Gaddafi stadium, where the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka was scheduled.
The terrorists opened fire, injuring six Sri Lankan players and killing five police personnel. Those injured included Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samarveera, Tharanga Parnavithana and coach Trevor Bayliss, an Australian. The players were airlifted from the stadium by a Pakistani army helicopter taken to Sri Lanka via Abu Dhabi.
