The senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer had sustained 60 per cent burns on September 14 after he reportedly set himself ablaze. However, the Malabar Hill police who have been investigating the case said that Sahay died in an accident when he entered a room where a havan was taking place and accidentally pushed a bottle of kerosene that fanned the flames and burnt him.
“Sahay had told us in his statement initially that he had gone in the room where a havan was taking place for Ganeshotsav and he accidentally pushed a kerosene bottle that fanned the flames and burnt him. He could not speak much due to his injuries,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (south region) Krushna Prakash.u00a0
But, sources within the police force said that the case was being hushed up as hospital authorities were not agreeing to the version provided by Sahay.
Sahay’s injuries were so serious that his face and neck had swollen up and he was finding it difficult to eat and talk. Later, his condition worsened, as his organs started failing and swelling was noticed in the brain owing to the blockage of oxygen.
He also suffered from kidney failure later. An officer added that a post-mortem was carried out at JJ Hospital in the presence of a tehsildar and videographed to avoid any allegations later.
Bill cleared
Meanwhile, the Rs 15-lakh bill for Sahay’s 20-day stay in Bombay Hospital was cleared by the cashless medical facility of the Maharashtra police.
One of the officers said that when Sahay was brought to the hospital, he was very worried about the bill and even told them to take him to KEM Hospital, as he couldn’t afford the treatment there.
Sahay’s brothers Ajit Sahay, Vijay Sahay and Sujit Sahay who live in Ranchi came to the city.
His last rites will be carried out at Banganga on Friday with state honours.
Officials added that Sahay’s brother-in-law Inspector General, BSF Arun Kumar Sinha had also reached the city for the last rites.
In the news
Sahay was in the news when he recently submitted an inquiry report detailing alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) during the tenure of its former chief Deepak Kapoor.
