IT will rise again, says renowned educationist

The information technology sector will rise again. Thanks to the global economic slowdown.

The statement comes from renowned IT educationist Aruna Katara. According to her, a huge untapped potential exists in core IT sector development in India. She pointed out that the IT sector will come out stronger.

Katara pointed out that Indians, till now, were writing programmes for other companies and not using their skills as extensively. "The use of IT in core sectors like engineering, medicine, etc is minimal in India. The work done is really tip of the iceberg," she added.

The amount of research and development that "we can do as academicians in the IT sector" is enormous, according to Katara. "Most IT potential in India is untapped," she said.

She feels the slowdown has shown the IT educators that there was so much more they could do. "The doors for core IT work will now open with this realisation," she said.

According to a NASSCOM source, even the Indian IT-BPO companies are walking the talk on Green IT, they are taking initiatives that are going beyond lip service and leading to a paradigm shift in the way they do business.
