Perplexed by string of con jobs on women by people impersonating cops, police detain college student with police uniform in his bag

After 13 cases of women looted by people impersonating police officers in the past three months, the police have finally got their hands on a person they believe is behind these incidents. But as no complainant has yet identified the person caught, the police have decided to take the help of the media to publish his picture and see if anybody can identify him.u00a0

Now, the Special Cell officers have caught a college student who was carrying a police uniform in a bag. The police suspect he was part of the gang that was conning women by impersonating police officers.

Many explanations
During a nakabandi, Special Cell officers caught first year commerce student Dattatray Mahadeo Mohite of the Annasaheb Magar College with a police uniform in his backpack. He initially told police officers he was carrying the uniform as he wished to join the police force but could not pass the selection procedures. The police said later Mohite lied to them, saying it was the uniform of his brother, who was working at the Faraskhana police station.

As officers questioned him further, Mohite spilled the beans and confessed to lying. PI Raghunath Jadhav, who is looking into the matter, has appealed to people that if they have encountered him impersonating a police officer, they should immediately report this to the Special Cell.

"We had contacted two such complainants, who were robbed in similar fashion, but after seeing Mohite both have replied in the negative," said PI Jadhav. "We are trying to reach more complainants before we could believe in his claims."

Jadhav added that they had verified with Mohite's college authorities and found he was regular in his attendance. "We have recovered a licence from him, and the person to whom the licence belongs has said he had lost it in Wadgaon Sheri some days ago," said Jadhav. "Mohite's various claims are confusing."
