The journey of Mumbai-based music band Vayu, now known as Para Vayu, is familiar to most lovers of Rock music. Now, the band is back in the city with songs from their soon-to-be released album alongwith some of their earlier hit tracks.
The band is also excited as Gopal Dutta, their drummer from Vayu, is now back with them. "It's good news for us and for those who love our music. Now, the band is a true combination of old and new musicians," said guitarist and founder, Ravi Iyer.
The band now features Soumitra Bhat (vocals/guitar), Crosby Fernandes (bass), Shirish Malhotra (violin/flute), Creyhl Periera (keyboard), Ravi Iyer (vocalist) and Gopal Dutta (drums).
After the release of their first album Wings of a Dream in June 2009, Iyer and Fernandes reformed Vayu to Para Vayu to explore a wider genre of music. Now, a year later, they are back with their new album, Soul Alive, which will officially launch in two months.
"It features 10 originals and the soundtrack is a combination of Jazz instruments, Progressive Rock, Funk, Alternative Rock and Blues. It's currently at the mixing and matching stage but we will give the crowds a taste of it," adds Ravi. The band is highly influenced by Metal, Classic Rock, Blues, Pop, Jazz Rock and even Hindustani classical songs.
But, its not just music that connects the old and fresh musicians but also a common goal of "quality music and performance". Explains Ravi, "Everyone wonders about whether the old band will be able to gel with the new members but I have realised that it's not a difficult task if each one believes in producing quality music."
The band feels that the new breed of musicians are solely missing "soul and passion".

"The urge to learn is no longer there. Actually, starting a rock band has become a cool statement and so they just learn a few chords and start to play," observes Ravi. But he is happy that the overexposure of music is getting youngsters attracted to Rock music. Speaking on their upcoming performance, Ravi mentions that his members are always excited to perform in Pune.

"The best part is that people know music and are ready to listen to experimental music," he concludes with a smile.
