An FIR has been registered at the Tughlak Road Police Station and police are going through the CCTV footages to find the culprit.
As per the FIR, a bag of Naoki Ito, a minister in the Japanese embassy, was stolen from the VIP enclosure, which was guarded heavily by security personnel.
"We are looking into who were the people sitting near him. We are watching the video footages and trying to find out how it happened," a senior police officer said.
Police are yet to arrest anybody. Ito's bag contained a diplomatic passport, ID card, some other documents and cash.
"Local police personnel were not there inside the VIP enclosure. We are looking at all angles on how it happened," the officer said.
The theft comes as an embarrassment for the government as it happened amid large scale security arrangements made for this year's Republic Day.
Mobile hit teams, anti-aircraft guns and sharp-shooters of the elite NSG were deployed at various locations while paramilitary and Delhi Police commandos kept a tight vigil along the route of the Republic Day parade.
Nearly 20,000 gun-toting policemen were fanned out across Delhi.
