A kite-flying excursion to Pashan lake turned tragic when two young men from a group of four friends drowned in the water body yesterday afternoon.
The two who drowned were brothers. Identified as Nilesh (19) and Datta Kasabe (22), they had gone to the lake with their friends Prithviraj Kamble and Avinash Nakare.

“Owing to the Christmas holiday, the Kasabe brothers, my friend Avinash and I planned to do some kite-flying by the lakeside,” Kamble said. “As we were engrossed in the activity, Avinash Nakare asked Nilesh to accompany him into the water for some swimming.
At that time I tried to stop them, but Nilesh insisted on it and claimed that he was swimmer, and they entered the lake.”
Double whammy
Kamble said when Nilesh started drowning, his brother took plunged into the water to save him, but both ended up drowning in the lake. Unable to save them, the third man in the water, Nakare, returned to the shore.
“I was watching and felt helpless,” Kamble said. “I called a few boys who had come there. They called the fire brigade, but the brothers had drowned and could not be saved.”
Nilesh and Datta hailed from Latur and had come to the city to earn a livelihood. Datta worked with a private company that deals in digital TV connections. Both brothers lived in Shivnagar, Sutarwadi, from where they had come to the lake.
“We have sent the dead bodies for autopsy at the civil hospital, Aundh,” Assistant Police Inspector S B Javale said.u00a0
