The incident took place late last night when Narsinh Masani consumed a poisonous substance at his residence, police said.
According to police, Masani was immediately rushed to the nearest government hospital where his condition is said to be stable.
In his statement to the police, Narsinh said he tried to commit suicide following mental and physical harassment by some policemen over the past few days who had been asking him about his source of income and beating up his men.
Hiralal Masani, Narsinh's brother and owner of Kuber boat, which was hijacked by terrorists in the mid seas of Gujarat to reach close to the Mumbai coast, said his brother was facing mental and physical torture by one Deputy SP level officer of the district.
"Due to the continuous and unwanted torture Narsinh attempted suicide last night," Hiralal said.
A case has been registered at the local police station and further investigation is on, the police said.
