Ramakka, a resident of Chikka Banawara, had deposited Rs 1 lakh under the fixed deposit scheme with the SBI a few years back.

When the amount crossed Rs 1 lakh with the interest, the bank officials sent her a notice reminding her to file income tax return with the bank.

Accidentally, the bank officials sent the reminder notice to a wrong address with the same name. A few days back, a woman claiming to be Ramakka approached the bank officials with the notice and filed the returns. She later informed that she wanted to withdraw the money as she was in urgent need of money.

Without verifying details, the bank returned the deposit of Rs 1 lakh with an interest amount of Rs 40,277.

The incident came to light when the genuine customer, Ramakka, came to the bank to check her account. The bank officials realised they were conned by Ramakka.

According to SBI assistant general manager Dr Avinash, the fake Ramakka even brought a woman and a man and told the officials that they are her mother and husband respectively.

The police saidu00a0the bank officials could have averted this cheating by merely checking the records of Ramakka and matching her photographs and thumb impression/signature. But they didn't do that.

However, the bank officials justified their action saying when they felt something fishy they took a written assurance from her that she would return the amount if in case someone comes to claim.

The Peenya police are on the look out for the lady, a resident of Abbigere village.
