Parties demand Development Control Rules be made available in Marathi

Language barrier stops GB meet called to discuss Development Plan for Pune

A meeting of the General Body (GB) of the Pune Municipal Corporation yesterday to discuss the Development Plan was adjourned until next month after political leaders from all parties made a special demand that the Development Control (DC) Rules be made available in Marathi.

The meeting was supposed to discuss the new Development Plan for the old city limits, but all parties created a ruckus because the DC Rules were not available in Marathi and forced the adjournment.

The Development Plan was presented in the last General Body meeting held on October 29 and further discussions were kept for yesterday’s meeting.

“If we are planning for the next 20 years, then we have to study all the things, but how will common people understand it if all the material is in the English language,” city BJP president Vikas Mathkari said. “All the reports concerned and the DC Rules should be in Marathi, but a copy is available only in English. If we are planning for 20 years, we should be clear about all the rules and must understand what is proposed and what can be done. If we take any decision in a hurry, then it will be of no use.”

Mathkari also said that the next meeting would be held after a month, which will give sufficient time to study the plan and the report. Corporators also demanded a copy of the Development Plan and the maps be made available to each and every one of them.

“All the members should be aware about what is mentioned in the plan and rules,” MNS corporator Baburao Vagaskar said. “All the things pass from the members to the citizens so that there is awareness about the new plan among citizens, but the rules are in English and this is difficult to understand for the layman. Also, all the members should tally what has happened and what is proposed so that a discussion on such things can happen smoothly.”

After the Development Plan is approved by the corporators, it will be put before the citizens for suggestions.u00a0
