Get a crash course on Japanese culture through this exhibition of 70 traditional dolls epitomising Japanese folk tales and traditions

The latest exhibition in town is The Dolls of Japan, which has already got 5,000 visitors in just two days. It features specially crafted Japanese dolls, which are related to local festivals, folktales, historical facts, art and mythology.

"Just as Lakshmi idols symbolise Diwali, the Japanese have dolls that epitomise their traditions and festivals," explains Janhavi Pathak, junior teacher at Indo-Japanese Association of Pune. These dolls are being exhibited as part of a worldwide tour.

The dolls were earlier exhibited in Sydney and will head to Ahmedabad after this trip. "If you compare the culture of India and Japan, you will realise that both are synonymous with each other," adds Pathak. The exhibition features 70 dolls, in beautiful colours decked in their traditional costumes.

As the Japanese names of these dolls are often tongue-twisters, they have even put up an English version of stories connected to them.
