Lesson in humanity for chain-snatcher

Two people chase down minor suspect, then save him from fury of mob

A 17-year oldu00a0boy caught by a student and a store executive after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from an elderly woman in Erandvana soon found out fate had actually been kind to him by sending the two after him.

For after the boy was caught, an angry mob began thrashing him and it was the very two who had chased him down, junior college student Siddharth Sant (16) and store executive Vijeyndra Gaikwad (24), who now rescued him from the crowd and handed him over to the police.

Help, thief!
After Rajani Shankarrao Satav (61), who was wearing a 20 gram gold chain, screamed for help when her ornament was snatched, Sant, a Symbiosis Junior College student who was at a nearby mobile shop, and Gaikwad, an executive working in a mobile shop, came to her rescue.

They spotted the suspect running with the chain and chased him even as a crowd gathered. After the chain-snatcher had been caught, the angry mob started beating the accused mercilessly.

"I saw a guy running with a gold chain. He banged into a two-wheeler and fell on the road. I initially thought it was an accident. But when I heard a commotion, I realised what had happened," said Sant.

Gaikwad, who saw the incident unfold and chased the accused, said, "We caught him in a nearby alley. The mob was livid and thrashed the accused. No one was in a mood to listen."

Pacifying the crowd
Sant and Gaikwad pacified the crowd, convincing people that it was better to hand over the culprit to the police.

"After I suggested that we take him to the police station, the crowd quickly dispersed. The lady whose jewellery had been stolen was present there and we asked her to lodge a complaint at the police station," Sant said. "As law abiding citizens, we realised we do not have the right to take the law in our hands."

Gaikwad and Sant were felicitated by Commissioner of Police Meeran Chadha Borwankar for showing alertness and catching a thief.

Police Inspector Chandrakant Ghodke of the Kothrud police station said the accused was shifted to a remand home in accordance with a court order.
