MHA seeks report on Dhoni's gun application

The Union Home Ministry has sought a report on Team India captain M S Dhoni's application for a license to procure a 9mm bore pistol. The MHA action came nearly 10 months after the cricketer submitted documents to the Ranchi district administration and five months after the state government forwarded it to the Centre.

According to the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Arun Ekka, the MHA had recently sought from the state home department more details on Dhoni's application for license. "I have forwarded it to the senior Superintendent of police, Ranchi, for further inquiry. But it could be taken up only after the enforcement of the model code of conduct is over", Ekka said.

The Ranchi district administration had in September last year sought a character certificate from the star cricketer for the clearance of his application. But the then Chief Minister Shibu Soren intervened and asked the authorities to soften rules and forward it to the Centre.

The cricketer applied for the license on August 18, 2008, for the weapon, which requires a mandatory sanction from the MHA.
