After transfer of Ayurveda Dept from Pune university to MUHS, latter wants two-acre garden to be handed over too for proper maintenance

Au00a0fight is brewing in the city over a patch of land. Two esteemed universities ufffdUniversity of Pune (UoP) and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) ufffd are at loggerheads with each other over two acres of land.

In a letter sent by the dean's office of MUHS, the medical university has asked the UoP to 'hand over' a two-acre garden plot on the UoP campus for maintenance purposes.

In the letter sent by MUHS dean Dr Arun Jamkar, it has been said that since the department of Ayurveda now comes under MUHS, the ayurveda garden ufffd which has about 300 species of ayurvedic plants of which some are rare and precious ufffd should be handed over to them for maintenance.

MUHS authorities said that they felt the need to do so because the garden is in a bad state as there is no one to maintain it.

"Since the department is under our university, we want them to handover the maintenance of the garden to us and all funds related to that. Also, the garden needs to be maintained by people who know ayurveda well and we can do so. But so far we haven't got a positive response," said Jamkar.

According to sources, the fight is not just over the two-acre garden plot but also over a lot of money that poured in for developing and maintaining it.

"A few years ago the UoP had hosted the World Ayurveda Conference. They then received a lot of funds for developing the interest of students towards ayurveda, set up new courses and to set up and maintain the ayurvedic garden. Besides the garden plot, the infighting is also about the funds," an official said.

Dr Vasudev Gade, director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD) said that UoP had not yet received any written communication or proposal from MUHS regarding this matter. "All talks have been on an informal level," said Gade.
