The bar looked happyu00a0-- that's always a good sign. It's wall, lined with portraits of classic and new-age comics including the likes of Alexei Sayle made us go goggle-eyed. Honestly, like us, most of you may not know who these strange men are. 
An act at The Comedy Store
So we got ourselves a mean, green apple martini (the sugar syrup martini err Pomegranate version will make you weep) and a Mojito to go for the opening day of The Comedy Store, UK's biggest export this year to The Palladiumu00a0-- stand-up comedy four nights a week.
As we settled into the 'black box' or the 300-seater auditorium, some impressive speakers blasted Elvis and Phil Collins. Frankly, anything that follows Phil Collins has to be good. Brit stand up Ian Moore was both good and funny. The host proved to be the most effortless act of the evening. Moore did some of the expected gags which included pulling up latecomers ('Are you all a part of a boy band?' he asked a bunch of students), but his spontaneous wit and sparring with eager-to-be-cheeky audience members got the laughs rolling.
Moore's Brit associate Gordon Southern laughed mostly at himself, which is equally tough to pull off cracking us up completely when he spun some yarn around a Chinese pirated DVD. But it's American comic Dave Fulton who got the loudest laughs with his out-there cheeky humour that Americans are known for. Politics. Check. ('After eight years of Bush, we'd be happy if you'd elect even a sofa') Sex. Check. Sport. Check. It was raining laughter. Literally, as we noticed a pool of water next to us, thanks to the leaky roof.
You know what they say about jokes sounding really lousy when they're retold. It's worse on paper. Get your own gag.
