Madhya Pradesh Industry Minister Rajendra Shukla today congratulated Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi of the Indian Air Force for becoming the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo.

Both Chaturvedi and Shukla hail from Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. "Avani has added a new chapter in the Indian Air Force history and this has raised the honour of people of Madhya Pradesh, especially the Vindhya region," said the minister.

The IAF officer's father D P Chaturvedi, who is posted as an executive engineer with the water resources department at Rewa, told PTI, "She called me after the solo flight and was very happy.

She told me it was successful. "I asked her to keep her confidence level always high," he said. Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo when she flew a MiG-21 bison in her first solo flight from the IAF's Jamnagar base on Monday.
