Young professionals in the city have formed their own rock-climbing group called blrclimbers (Bangalore Climbers), and they head out to Turahalli on weekends, where they tackle the boulders with unbridled enthusiasm.u00a0
"We don't usually go out partying. Most weekends, we head out to places around the city, which are great spots for trekking or rock climbing," says Rita Joseph, graphic designer.
"I have been rock climbing for 8 years now. Ever since I discovered Turahalli, my friends and I have been regulars there," says Ravee, software engineer.u00a0
Turahalli is located in South Bangalore, off Kanakpura Road, nearly 8 km from Banashankari temple. Shrub jungle, rich in flora, fauna and avifauna, surrounds this isolated hill packed with boulders of granite in various sizes and shapes.
Many climbers from Bangalore, who have been practicing in Turahalli, have taken part in climbing competitions in Thailand, Singapore and Jakarta and have brought laurels to the climbing community of Bangalore.u00a0
Turahalli is also frequented by naturalists, bird watchers and butterfly watchers among others.u00a0
"For many decades young and enthusiastic rock climbers from Bangalore have been practicing at Turahalli. For many climbers, Turahalli is a temple," says Ravee.
"Turahalli is a great place to practice for both novices and professionals because of the nature of the rocks.
While advanced climbers need to invest in special gear, amateurs would do well to explore the terrain under expert guidance," says Dinesh, a veteran climber who works with Wildcraft.
Bonding over boulders
The blrclimbers had organised a get-together at Turahalli last year. The overwhelming response they got has encouraged them to organise a similar meet this Sunday (Feb 15). As part of the celebrations, demonstration climbs and introductory sessions will be organised at Turahalli (see box).
"An event like this helps to introduce youngsters to rock climbing and spread the message of conservation.
Climbers practice LNT (Leave No Trace) diligently," says Naveen a member of blrclimbers.
"We want to celebrate the true spirit of the sport. An event like this would help us find people who share our passion for rock climbing," adds Ravee.
