Metro breaks all records

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been breaking its ridership records and the same stride continued on Monday. Within six days of registering its highest-ever ridership, for the first time, the Metro carried over 18 lakh people in a day.

The 18 lakh mark on the day has been attributed to the opening of the new Dwarka-Vaishali line last month.
"When the Delhi Metro kicked off in 2002, we claimed it will carry on an average 20 lakh people in the years ahead. Today, we have almost reached that number. Opening of the new line has brought in the rush from Ghaziabad. By December 2011, we might cross the 20 lakh ridership mark as well," said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

The passenger figure record was 18, 30,944. The average ridership, which used to be around 15.5 lakh during weekdays till May 2011, is now touching the 17 lakh mark on working days, an increase of over 1.5 lakh passengers daily.

The commuters, however, were not so excited. Shivani Dutta, a Delhi University student, said, "I missed five metros to Vishwavidyalya due to heavy rush. People kept shoving each other to get inside."
