New hostel blocks will be ready by the time the new session begins
Now outstation students at Delhi University's Miranda House won't have to worry about a tight squeeze. The college for women, which has a full-fledged hostel, is also constructing an extension block with 50 rooms. The new housing complex is under construction and will be ready by the time the session begins. It will be used on twin-sharing basis and will be able to accommodate around 100 students.

No house hunting
"The extension block will lend a relief to students as they would not need to look outside for PG accommodation. Besides, we are doing the hostel kitchen again. We have conceptualised everything," said Dr Pratibha Jolly, Miranda House principal.
Also, though there are no pre-admission forms, the college is coming out with expression of interest forms online. According to Jolly, "These are forms for students who are interested in the college and if they wish they can send their profiles to us. These are not registration forms."
The college will have a large common room, besides the existing one, to be built near the cafeteria. The institute is also placing new water dispensing modules at various points to make students comfortable. "Our chemistry lab is the only one of its kind in the campus. Other colleges are now trying to follow the pattern. Apart from that, we are the only college to have a bounce-back surface basketball court," said Jolly.
During Commonwealth Games, the college hostel was taken up for accommodating guests. During the event, hostel rooms and toilets were given a makeover with modern facilities and upholstery. And that has translated into a hike in fees. A fresher at Miranda House will now pay Rs 40,000 as hostel fee, Rs 11,000 more than last session. The amount includes Rs 5,000 as security deposit, which used to be Rs 1,500.
"A hostel fee hike is likely for various reasons. The hostels have had a makeover and so the security is to be maintained. Inflation is another reason," said Jolly.u00a0But most students aren't complaining. "The hostels have had a good makeover. Staying here is so cool," said Astha Sinha, a hosteller at Miranda House.

A dedicated centre, specially trained volunteers and pick up services have all been put in place at Delhi University. To assist differently-abled students, the University every year organises a team of volunteers, teachers, counsellors and sign language experts who help candidates in completing their forms and formalities.
This year too, the office of the Dean Students' Welfare (DSW) and the Equal Opportunities Cell are cooperating to make the process a friendly affair for 'special children'. Last year, a little less than 450 students in this category turned up for admissions, which was a good number as against the previous years.
