Crime against women rose 2 per cent in Maharashtra ringing a wake-up call for the state, according to the latest figures released by Maharashtra Police
Standing testimony to headlines in the media, crime rate against women rose almost 2 per cent in the last two years. In Maharashtra, crime rate against women went up to 17,800 in 2012 from 17,462 in 2012, according to the latest data released by the Maharashtra Police. What is even more startling is the fact that a congnisable offence is registered every three minutes in the state.

While, Mumbai topped in number of crimes against women, it came in at 23rd position in the state when compared against the population.
Of the total crime registered against women, cruelty by husbands and in-laws was one of the prime reasons with 43% of total cases and molestation was second with 22% of cases registered. Number of rapes registered was 10% while the remaining 25% of crimes were cases of abetment to suicide, dowry death, attempt to murder and sexual harassment.
“The total conviction rate in the state has gone up to 9.4% in 2012 after several efforts which is a positive step,” said Home Minister of the state, R R Patil.
During 2012, attempt to murder for dowry came down by 20% but there was a 20% increase in number of cases regarding sexual harassment. In 2012, number of rapes (for victims below age of 10) fell by 6.62%, but rose up 14.04% for victims in the age group of 14-18 years.
