The city will have to brave another three or four days of heat and humidity. Senior officials from the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) yesterday said the arrival of the monsoon in the district would take a few days more.
They said the delay in the monsoon was a result of weak current conditions over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal and that it would take three to four days for the situation to improve.

“There has been a slight delay in the prevalence of the monsoon over the state and it is likely to continue till June 18. Conditions might change after that. Currently, the city is receiving less than normal rain or pre-monsoon showers, but this is expected to improve in a week. During that time, the temperature will fluctuate intermittently,” IMD director, weather central, Sunitha Devi said.
The prevailing maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are 33 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. The last advance of the monsoon was on June 6 and there has been no further progress in the past nine days, which the IMD says is not unusual.
“A similar phenomenon of lull in activity was last experienced in 2009 where the rains arrived after June 25. We are expecting the conditions to become favourable, which will further advance the southwest monsoon into some more parts of interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and south of Andhra Pradesh,” Devi said.u00a0
