Communal tension prevailed in some parts of New Sangavi and Bhosari after unidentified people attacked a church in the wee hours yesterday.
The unidentified people reportedly damaged the glass cases of the statues installed on the premises of Saint Thomas Church in Sangavi and an auto spare parts showroom in Kasarwadi.
According to Father Francis, he heard some noise around 1.30 am on Wednesday in Sangavi.
In the morning, he realised that the glass case of the Mother Mary statue installed outside the church was broken.
He then informed other trustees who reported the incident to the Sangavi police station.
A similar incident was reported in Kasarwadi, where the glass case of the Mother Mary statue installed outside the auto spare part showroom was found broken. The owner, Richard Swami-nathan, has registered a case at the Bhosari police station.
DCP Dnyaneshwar Chavan of Zone III said, "No one has been arrested regarding this incident, but we have increased patrolling to avoid such incidents."
DCP Chavan denied the link between the two incidents and said, "I do not believe that the same people were behind both the incidents."
