A classic error
There was pin drop silence, followed by nervous laughter, when Rohan Murthy mentioned the rival Jaipur Lit Fest during yesterday’s afternoon session, Reviving the Classics, at the Tata Literature Live! at Experimental Theatre, NCPA. “We didn’t hear that, did we?” Festival director, Anil Dharker replied in jest.

“Hey, I thought we were all friends here,” Murthy quipped. That wasn’t the only gaffe. Throughout, the Infosys scion shared information on the Murthy Classical Library that brings out five translated volumes of India’s great and ancient texts annually. He referred to Panini, a Sanskrit grammarian as Pingala, a Sanskrit mathematician and grammarian. This until he was corrected by a member of the audience.

An online travel community has listed six haunted places in India that they claim will scare the living daylights out of you. The spookfest includes a fort in Rajasthan that prohibits tourists from entering post sunset, a coastal destination in Surat that is an epicentre of horror stories, a cluster of mines in Mussoorie replete with local folklore, a hill-station in Darjeeling that has a stretch called Death Road and Pune’s Shaniwar Wada. One thing’s for sure, enthusiasts might need to go on another vacation to recover from this scare-cation.

This is a welcome move for those who dig their visits to the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum. Prickly questions have been dealt with in the films that will be screened today at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay as part of the ‘Best of Kashish’ event organised by Saathi-IIT Bombay and Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. What gives us one more reason to cheer is that the four films in Marathi (with English subtitles), starring well-known actors from the Marathi film industry, including Dilip Prabhavalkar, Mukta Barve, Chhaya Kadam and Sanyogita Bhave. First, we saw LGBT films moving to supposedly ‘mainstream’ venues and now with regional languages being a part of the LGBT narrative, we welcome more minds opening up the discourse.

The film line-up includes Shot, Ek Maaya Ashi Hi (Love Such As This), Sundar (Beautiful) directed by Rohan Kanawade and feature film, Jayjaykar (Triumph of Life). The free show kicks off at 4 pm at the PC Saxena Auditorium.

Theatre call with Sanjna Kapoor
Sanjna Kapoor is in a good mood these days. As part of Junoon’s Art at Play, she’s set to give Gurgaon’s kids a taste of theatre. Starting on Childrens’ Day, Kapoor will conduct a four-day intensive theatre-acting workshop for kids between seven and nine years, and 10 to 12 years, in Gurgaon.

When this diarist asked Kapoor about her new adventure, she was elated. “It’s always a delicious challenge to work with children from different cities. The city culture impacts them so much. I’ve worked with children in Trivandrum, Pune, Baroda, Jodhpur, Delhi and of course, Mumbai, and each place has its flavour of engagement,” she said, adding, “But most of all, I love how children throw themselves whole heartedly into the magical world of make believe. It’s the same everywhere. Now, I can’t wait to dive into the workshops at Gurgaon. What better way to celebrate Children’s Day than by immersing myself into their world.”
