"I sat in the first-class compartment with the bag and my wife boarded the second-class ladies compartment," said Ramgopal Iyer (64), who was on his way to a pooja in Powai. At around 7.25 am, he got off at Kanjurmarg, leaving the bag behind on the overhead rack.
On realising the error, Iyer and his wife approached the policemen at Kanjurmarg platform. "The policeman on duty, Subash Nande, dialled the helpline number as well as the Ghatkopar GRP and reported the incident. However, by then, the train had left that station," said Iyer.
The helpline authorities, however, informed the railway police at the next platform. "I got a call at around 7.51 am about the bag," said assistant sub inspector Raju Makhare from Byculla.
When the train arrived, Makhare, along with constable Yogesh Teli found the bag, with its contents intact. "The Mumbai railway police helped me find my life's savings. I am very grateful to them for returning it to me in just two hours," said Iyer.
