Muslim group wants cops to pay Rs 10 cr for defaming them

Functionaries of the Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO), the daughter organisation of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), yesterday filed a defamation case against the city police for allegedly maligning its image by publishing a circular, falsely accusing the organisation of spreading jihad.

Seeking Rs 10 crore in damages, the organisation filed the case in the Bombay High Court against the Special Branch headed by Additional Commissioner of Police Naval Bajaj.

The organisation officials said that they had given Bajaj time to investigate into the matter, as to who had leaked the ‘internal circular’ in April and initiate action against the guilty.

“Bajaj had told us that he would inquire and take appropriate action against the miscreant, but nothing has been done so far. No further inquiry was conducted in this case. Even the circular wasn’t recalled,” said Mohammad Aslam Gazi, state spokesperson for JIH.

Gazi added that they moved the court after they failed to receive a response from the police, and have made nine organisations party to the notice. “These nine parties are -- central and state governments, the home secretary, the IB chief, DGP (Maharashtra), the city police commissioner, the additional commissioner of police, SB, DCP (SB),” he said.

The circular, issued in the third week of March, read: “The group, GIO, is an offshoot of the 65-year-old Jamat-e-Islami Organisation and is currently active in Kerala. The aim of this organisation is to make more and more Muslim women aware of their religion and the holy Quran. But the real objective of this organisation
is to brainwash college and school girls and train them for jihad.”

The circular also named Saleha Baji and Sumayya as the organisation heads.
