Holding a protest rally, the students from the Northeast criticised the Karnataka Government for what they said was its apathy and negligence in handling the case, and said the attitude of the government of that state amounted to “institutionalised racism” towards the people of the Northeast.

Marching from Camp to Iskon, the students demanded punishment for all those involved in the “killing”. “We want to defend our fundamental rights and honour. We live in a secular country. Why, then, are we alienated? We go to big cities for jobs and education; the government should provide us security,” said Somanand Singh, organiser of the rally.

Even after 11 days, the police have not been able to make any headway in the case, which has further annoyed the students. While the police have said Richard died because of an accident, friends of the 19-year-old victim insist he succumbed to injuries he suffered when he was severely assaulted by seniors in his college on April 18.

Richard was a second semester student of the Acharya NRV School of Architecture in Bangalore.u00a0
