Major pre-monsoon works, including construction of roads and footpaths, laying of sewage pipelines still pending; commuters to bear the brunt yet again

NMMC misses deadline, Monsoon arrives on time

Even though Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Bhaskar Wankhede had set a deadline of May 31 for all the civic departments to complete pre-monsoon works, it has been observed that most of them are pending. Of the lot, what is going to inconvenience Navi Mumbaikars most are the pending works of the engineering department, as it had undertaken various construction projects, including construction of concrete roads, footpaths, and laying of sewage pipeline, among others.

Work in progress: Repair work pending at Vashi ward office and (below) Pavne bridge despite NMMC Commissioner setting May 31 as the deadline for all pre-monsoon work to be completed

Considering the present status of these works, it appears that the department will require another two to three months to finish these projects.
Despite repeated attempts NMMC city engineer Mohan Dagaonkar remained unavailable for comment. Civic chief Wankhede said, “I am aware of the few projects which are incomplete though the deadline has passed. I have been informed that these works will be finished soon.”

‘Lack of planning’
Dashrath Bhagat, NMMC corporator and Navi Mumbai Congress chief, said, “In spite of knowing that the rains are going to start, the NMMC officials did not bother to finish construction work in time. It is surprising to see how they can ignore commissioner’s instructions. Had the engineering department implemented civil construction projects with proper planning, all these works would have been completed in time. The department should finish all these works in next few days or else people will have to bear the brunt for NMMC’s negligence.”

Tushar Yadav, an employee at a pharmaceutical company, claimed that he faces inconvenience because the NMMC hasn’t completed the construction of roads at Sector 17 in Vashi. “I have seen how slowly the corporation has been carrying out construction of roads in sector 17. Since rains have started, we have to pass through mud, as the roads are yet to be constructed. The NMMC should complete the construction immediately,” Yadav said. Apart from pending roadworks, the NMMC is yet to complete the laying of sewage line, which was supposed to be over by May 31. Similarly, the roads that were dug for laying these pipelines are yet to be repaired. u00a0
