Union ministers Arun Jaitley, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani and senior BJP leaders were among those who attended the function.
The prime minister said there were many interesting stories if one were to look at the socio-economic dimensions of these festivals.
Modi said he wanted to host the 'Diwali Milan' earlier but because of his busy schedule he could not do so.
The function saw journalists vying with each other to take selfie with Modi.
BJP chief Shah said the party got late in celebrating 'Diwali Milan' but he was glad that the tradition continued.
In 2014, Modi organised a similar interaction with the media fraternity.
