Supply utility to replace inefficient pump sets to prevent waste

Having chalked out an ambitious plan to replace 5.5 lakh agricultural pumps that guzzle power with energy efficient ones, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has set its sights on providing the city with uninterrupted supply.

"This energy can be used for other purposes like for the city," said Satya Prem Kumar, GM HRD, BESCOM.

In a pilot project at Doddaballapur in the district where 604 farmers have been identified, BESCOM has decided to replace these pump sets within the next three months.

When farmers use over sized pumps of poor quality and do not maintain them, they face problems. This also results in improper usage of water for their fields.

"This project would lead to water conservation and power distribution in a more efficient manner," said Madhusudan Sreedharan, Associate Vice President, Enzen Global Solutions.

NGO participation

NGOs have also been roped in to educate farmers on energy saving and water conservation.

The entire project is a public private initiative and would involve the electricity department, a private company, local NGOs and the farmers.
