Many go home disappointed as market sends goats with moon on forehead to Mumbai
Higher demand for goats in Mumbai market had an unexpected impact in the city as there were no goats left with chand mark on their forehead. These goats would have fetched lakhs of rupees. The Bhavani Peth 'mandi' (market) witnessed a mad rush of customers looking for their choice of goats to be sacrificed on Bakri Eid that will be observed today. However the 'boli' (rate) for goats saw a cold response, as there was not much of a choice available.
Abhijit Tade (30), whose family is in the business for generations, said, "Thousands of goats were brought from different parts of the state. But this year there was not a single bakri with a chand mark on its forehead. This was because all the goats with the mark were being sent to Mumbai as the demand was high there fetching higher rates than Pune."
"On Tuesday about 1,000 goats were sold from the Bhavani peth market. Goat sellers from Latur, Beed and other districts had landed up in the market to sell their goats," said Tade. Iqbal Ansari, a local citizen said, "Depending on the weight and height of the goat, the prices ranged from Rs 7,000 to Rs 30,000. One goat seller from Bhor sold his goat for Rs 30,000, the highest cost reported till Tuesday night."
u00a0The goat trading came to a halt at around 11pm.
