The University of Pune (UoP) has finally decided to take matters into its own hands. It will help city colleges fill up vacant posts of principals by providing them with a list of eligible candidates.u00a0u00a0

In a circular issued to all errant colleges, UoP's Board of College and University Department (BCUD) has appealed to all teachers to send their bio-data to the university if their qualification and work experience met the criteria for a principal's post.

The issue of principals in city colleges has been going on since the last two years when the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court made it mandatory for all colleges to have full-time principals. Colleges failing to comply would not be allowed to admit first-year students.

After the court order, the UoP issued notices to all affiliated colleges that didn't have full-time principals. Of the 300-odd institutes, a few appealed in the court stating various reasons for non-appointment while about 141 colleges that failed to take any action were barred by UoP from taking in fresh candidates.

However, considering the loss to students because of fewer seats available, the varsity has decided to help these colleges. In the circular, BCUD has appealed to all teachers including those living abroad or in other states, to apply for the post of principal if they met the criteria.

"Most colleges give the excuse that they don't have eligible candidates and no one is coming forward for the job. So, we have decided to prepare an entire database of candidates who are eligible and submit it to the colleges. Once that is done, it would be difficult for them to give the same old reason of non-availability of candidates," said Vasudev Gade, director of BCUD.

Adding that teachers have already started responding to the circular, Gade hopes to get a list ready within the next three weeks.
