In a major crackdown crime branch has apprehended seven persons and at least twelve police officers, including an assistant commissioner, have been transferred
At a time when oil prices are going through the roof, this development is significant. In a major crackdown on oil mafia, the Delhi police's crime branch has apprehended seven persons and at least twelve police officers, including an assistant commissioner were transferred. The action was taken following a FIR which was registered in the case by the crime branch a few days ago. The apprehended accused have been identified as Deepak Gupta, Ashish Nigam, Prem Singh, Son Singh, Pradeep Chaudhary, Subhash Thakur and Lalit Goel. Thakur and Goel have been kingpins of the racket.

Sources in the Delhi police said that the then assistant commissioner of police Sat Pal Gupta, station house officer (SHO), Kanchan Upadhyaya, five constables, two sub-inspectors, one assistant sub-inspector and two head constables were first sent to lines and then transferred after the revelations. "While the ACP has been transferred to security wing, the other eleven are being transferred to police training college (PTC)," sources said. Sources also said that a joint disciplinary enquiry (DE) will be initiated against the SHO and the other ten soon.

It all started a few weeks ago when commissioner of Delhi police BK Gupta received a complaint from an anonymous person about a racket active in northeast district (Harsh Vihar police station) of Delhi. The commissioner soon ordered an inquiry and transferred the case to crime branch, who in their investigations not only apprehended the accused and registered the case but also found police 'negligence'.

"A note has been sent to the police commissioner stating that not only has the police shown negligence in the case but we can't rule out connivance either and it needs to be looked into," sources said. A case of under relevant sections of adulteration has been lodged by the crime branch. MiD Day tried to contact police commissioner BK Gupta, but he wasn't available for comments.

In a front page story dated May 16, just a day after a Rs 5 hike on petrol prices, Late J Dey (who did a series of stories on the issue) reported on how Mumbai was the hub of a Rs 10,000 crore fuel racket. 
The kingpin of the diesel racket had been arrested and spilt the beans on how foreign vessels make a killing by selling their fuel.
Not the first time
A few months earlier, in a similar case, an assistant commissioner of police and station house officer of Delhi police were transferred after findings of an oil mafia racket in Fatehpur Beri area of south district.u00a0
"It was found that the senior police officers were on talking terms on mobile (22 calls were found) with the kingpin," the sources said. An inquiry is on in that case too.
