Red River ditches the run-and-gun gameplay style, an all too common first person shooter trait, for a realistic tactical war simulator. While this helps distinguish itself from the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series, it clearly isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Set in the fictional war-torn land of Tajikistan, the narrative opens with an expletive-laced video montage of events leading up to the game's story. The foul language used by most of the characters is overdone and gets annoying really fast, rendering the story a chore to sit through. The visuals too are nothing out of the ordinary.
Gameplay is a squad-based tactical affair, and is unforgiving even at the easiest settings. The large environments offer a high degree of freedom to tackle objectives. Heavy emphasis is placed on commanding the squad; using them strategically to advance, flank, heal or provide suppressing fire is the key to survival.

Red River doesn't offer the thrills or high production values found in similar war-themed shooters. However, it does offer a unique take on the gameplay, which will appeal to a niche crowd of gamers that dig realistic war simulation.
