A desire to chew on a juicy paan after dinner proved disastrous for Sunil Sukhramani alias Guddu (30), as he was brutally thrashed by his foe Omie Kalani, son of gangster turned politician Pappu Kalani, in Ulhasnagar on Sunday night.
This was the second time that Omie attacked Guddu in less than a year. Omie, who is on the run since nine months after charges of attempted murder were framed in the previous attack, has been booked once again for attacking Guddu. Police raided Omie’s house yesterday morning, but couldn’t find him.
Although, in police records Omie is shown as a wanted accused, he has been seen frequently attending functions in the city. MiD DAY had earlier reported on the same (‘Cops can’t find criminal, we can’, May 21).
Political rivalry
On November 13 last year, Omie along with his friends had attacked Guddu in the run- up to the Ulhasnagar civic elections. Omie had threatened him with a revolver asking his aunt, Neetu Sukhramani, to withdraw from contesting elections in Ward-35, as Omie’s mother had decided to contest from the same ward.
Guddu sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Fortis Hospital in Kalyan. Police had registered an FIR against Omie and his supporters, but did not arrest him.
Paan tiff
On Sunday, at around 11.30 pm, Guddu was returning home after eating a paan at Ambika Paan House, near Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar, when he came face to face with Omie and his group. Omie alongwith Moni, Nana and Vishnu attacked him with iron rods and sticks. Incidentally, the assault took place close to the Central Police station and, according to BJP corporator and Guddu’s uncle, Mahesh Sukhramani, a patrolling beat marshal witnessed the attack. But shockingly, he chose to remain a spectator.
“When Omie was attacking Guddu, the police constable told Omie, ‘Saheb iske sar par mat maro. Ye mar jayega aur aap fans jaoge (Sir, don’t hit him on the head. He will die and you will be in trouble)’. It’s the same policeman who is sheltering Omie,” said Mahesh.

“We have registered an FIR under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (acts done by several people in common intention) of the IPC. We also raided Kalani’s bungalow, but Omie was nowhere to be found,” said Mahadev Pimpalkar, senior inspector, Central Police Station. Guddu, who resides opposite Kalani’s residence, is undergoing treatment at Central Hospital.u00a0
