They lose valuables worth Rs 50,000 to 'social welfare department representative'
An elderly couple fell for a conman's monthly pension scheme and lost valuables worth Rs 50,000.
Gunabhushanam (60) and his wife were on their way to Nimhans for treatment when au00a0 middle-aged man approached them near Majestic and introduced himself as a representative of the social welfare department, police said.
He explained to the couple that the government had announced a special package for senior citizens through which they would be given Rs 1,000 every month.
He offered to help the couple to get the benefits and took them to a court complex on K G Road and got them to sign on some forms. He then took them in an autorickshaw to Gandhi Bazaar and even paid the fare. He told the couple that he would take them to his boss and advised them to remove their valuables and act like they were poor.
The couple willingly took off their jewellery, worth Rs 50,000, and gave it to the man to pack and keep safely. He then asked them to wait while he went in search of his boss.
After a three-hour wait, the couple realised they had been duped. They also found that the 'government office' was only a shop.
