Petition against Thackeray memorial at Shivaji Park

A petition will be filed against the construction of a temporary memorial for Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park.

The petition to be filed today before Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority in reference to the entire area of Shivaji Park which falls within the Coastal Regulation Zone Area. As per Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011, Shivaji Park, being a public park has been classified as being in CRZ-3, i.e. a No Development Zone.u00a0

As a result, it is illegal to construct anything on the spot. Yet, there has been an unauthorised construction of temporary memorial type structure at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.

Since Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011, has been issued under the provisions of Section 3 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986, hence its violation is an offence under the said Act.u00a0

The Competent Statutory Authority to provide a remedy to the violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011, is the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority.
